The former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has clarified reports suggesting that he plans to step aside for a younger candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku, who has already signalled his intention to run in 2027, clarified that his remarks during a BBC Hausa interview were misinterpreted.
The former vice president, who recently left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and teamed up with other opposition figures—including ex-governors Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi—under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), insisted he never suggested stepping down for anyone.
In a statement signed by his spokesperson, Paul Ibe, Atiku said:
“After a thorough review of both the video and transcripts of the interview – in the original Hausa and the English translation – it is evident that at no point did the former Vice President expressly state, suggest, or even imply that he intends to step down for anyone.”
He explained that his comment only underscored that young aspirants and other contenders are free to join the race.
“Atiku Abubakar clearly and unambiguously said that if a young candidate were to emerge through a competitive primary, he would readily support such a candidate without hesitation,” Ibe added.
