LAGOS, NIGERIA – Popular Nigerian social media influencer Martins Innocent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan, has been released on bail following his detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). His release comes after meeting the administrative bail conditions set by the anti-corruption agency.
The EFCC had previously announced that Otse was being investigated due to multiple petitions alleging financial misconduct. According to the agency, he had failed to respond to several invitations for questioning, prompting his arrest.
While Otse has been vocal in his criticism of the EFCC, the commission clarified that his detention was based solely on financial crime allegations and not influenced by his public statements. The EFCC emphasized its legal authority to detain suspects during investigations and assured that formal charges would be filed once inquiries were completed.
Otse’s legal team, led by Deji Adeyanju, confirmed his release and expressed gratitude to supporters, including prominent Nigerian figures such as Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Davido, and opposition lawmakers, for advocating on his behalf.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with Nigerians closely monitoring developments as the EFCC continues its investigation.
