The Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwoolu has insisted that the maintenance work at the Independence (McEwen) Bridge connecting the Marina and Onikan areas of Lagos Island with the Bonny Camp area of Victoria Island will continue for two weeks for the safety sake. He said the structural integrity of the bridge had deteriorated. He said, “delaying this intervention any further would have put lives at risk”.
Sanwo-Olu, speaking at the construction site when he paid an assessment visit to the Independence Bridge in Bonny Camp, apologised to Lagos residents over the traffic gridlock that occurred on Wednesday. According to the Governor, the decision to fix the Independence Bridge “was not made overnight, it has been in the works for over three years, carefully planned to avert a potential disaster”.
Speaking further, the governor said the construction will still continue but urged Lagosians to exercise patience and adopt the option of working flexibly. In his words, “I also want to urge businesses and organisations across Lagos to explore flexible work arrangements, including remote work and hybrid models. A temporary shift in work culture can go a long way in reducing traffic pressure and supporting our collective wellbeing”, he said.
“Let us embrace innovative solutions that keep our city moving while we carry out critical infrastructure repairs. Together, we can build a more resilient, responsive, and liveable Lagos”, Sanwo-olu added.
he asked for Lagosians’ continued patience and cooperation in this regard.
