Port Harcourt, Nigeria — Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retired), the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, underscored the pivotal role of military capabilities in safeguarding national strength and territorial integrity. His remarks were delivered on March 31, 2025, at the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Special Eid-El-Fitr Luncheon for troops held at the 29 Battalion Parade Ground in Port Harcourt Barracks.
Represented by the Secretary to Rivers State Government, Prof. Ibiba Lucky Worika, the administrator lauded the Nigerian Army (NA) as a globally esteemed force that has adapted to evolving warfare tactics and operational challenges. Despite economic and security hardships, he highlighted the army’s resolute commitment to protecting the nation’s sovereignty.
Addressing Nigeria’s current security landscape, Ibas called for both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to tackle emerging threats. He also praised the troops’ dedication to securing oil and gas installations in the Niger Delta Region (NDR), a feat he credited with bolstering the country’s oil production and economic stability.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, commended the unique overlap of the 2025 Ramadan and Lenten seasons as a reminder of unity and peaceful coexistence. Represented by Major General Kevin Aligbe, Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command, Oluyede emphasized the significance of selflessness—one of the Nigerian Army’s core values—and urged personnel to remain steadfast in their patriotism and sacrifice.
Oluyede reaffirmed his dedication to enhancing the operational effectiveness, welfare, and combat readiness of troops, aligning these goals with the strategic priorities of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. These objectives focus on strengthening national security and promoting sustainable development.
Adding to the occasion, Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 6 Division, expressed gratitude for hosting the luncheon, which served as a platform to honor the sacrifices of troops. Represented by Brigadier General Sani Ahmed, Commander of the 6 Division Garrison, Emekah highlighted the positive impact of military operations in the Niger Delta, noting a sustained increase in oil production quotas. He reassured local communities of the Division’s commitment to upholding global standards in its operations and adhering to the COAS’s command philosophy.
