The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has officially announced the sighting of the Shawwal moon across multiple cities in Nigeria, marking the conclusion of Ramadan 1446 and the beginning of Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
In a statement delivered at his palace in Sokoto on Saturday evening, the Sultan affirmed that the sighting had been confirmed by Islamic leaders in cities such as Sokoto, Kano, Maiduguri, Jos, Zaria, and Kaduna, as well as several rural areas. The observations were verified by the Sultanate Council.
The Sultan, one of the most prominent Islamic leaders in the country, called on Muslims in Nigeria to maintain peace and unity, emphasizing the importance of coexistence across religious and ethnic lines. He also urged citizens to pray for the nation and its leaders as they navigate various challenges.
Eid al-Fitr, celebrated globally by Muslims, marks the end of Ramadan—a month of fasting, reflection, and community. The Sultan’s announcement has set the stage for festivities throughout Nigeria, home to one of the largest Muslim populations in Africa.
