On Friday, leaders of the Yoruba sociopolitical group Afenifere paid a solidarity visit to lawyer and author Dele Farotimi at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre in Nigeria. The visit aimed to deliver a private message from their national leader, Chief Adebanjo, and to check on Farotimi’s wellbeing.
Farotimi, a member of Afenifere’s national caucus, is currently remanded in prison amid a defamation lawsuit filed by Chief Afe Babalola, the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD).
In a statement, Deputy Secretary General Alade Rotimi-John expressed the group’s disappointment with the chief magistrate’s handling of the case. The magistrate had declined to urgently address Farotimi’s bail application for what the group considers a bailable offense, describing the situation as a “deeply disturbing miscarriage of justice.”
The statement also mentioned that Afenifere would decide on its next course of action after the magistrate’s ruling on December 20.
Among the Afenifere leaders who visited the correctional centre were Chief Supo Shonibare, Basorun Segun Sanni, Mrs. Nike Olujembola, Mrs. Toyin Falade, Pastor Olayemi Olajuyinnu, and Mr. Tunde Babarinde.
