Another Igbo industrious and illustrious daughter, a woman activist and most importantly, a veteran and award-winning female artiste, Onyeka Onwenu is dead.
She was reported to have died at a popular hospital in Lagos after she slumped at the 80th birthday party of the Chief Executive Officer of Emzor Pharmaceutical, Mrs. Stella Okoli.
The sad news was confirmed by an eye witness who said, “It is unfortunate that Onyeka Onwenu just performed at the birthday of Mrs. Stella Okoli today, and after performing, she sat down and slumped. She was rushed to Reddington Hospital GRA Ikeja where she was pronounced dead.”
Ms Onwenu a US-trained broadcaster who has once worked with the Nigeria Television Authority was once a Local Government Chairman in Imo State. She was age 72 years old before she passed on.
Onyeka Onwenu is indeed a remarkable figure with a diverse career spanning music, journalism, and politics. Known as the “Elegant Stallion,” she has made significant contributions to various fields.
Her music, often described as “African Pop,” blends elements of Highlife, Afrobeat, Blues, Jazz, Igbo Spiritual, and Juju, reflecting her rich cultural heritage. Her songs often address themes of love, unity, and social issues, resonating deeply with listeners.
In addition to her musical career, Onyeka has been a strong advocate for women’s rights and development. As the Director General of the National Center for Women Development in Abuja, she focused on advocacy, promotion, and research on women’s issues in Nigeri She also spearheaded training and skills acquisition programs in areas like ICT, small business start-ups, catering, dressmaking, and knitting.
Her impact extends beyond music and advocacy. Onyeka has also made her mark as a television journalist and social critic, using her platform to address critical issues in Nigerian society.
May her soul rest in peace and God console the Igbo people now.
